An agenda for the next government

United Future leader, Peter Dunne, has set out an Agenda for Action for the next government.

Speaking to the Wellington South Rotary Club today, Mr Dunne said that some common themes had emerged over the last few weeks in the policy positions of the various parties, which he believed laid the basis for the programme to be followed by the incoming government when it is formed.

“While there are many differences between the parties, the following are the issues that have appeared most commonly, and about which New Zealanders feel most strongly.

“They are the items most people would expect the new government to focus its attention upon, and are all matters United Future would be keen to support as part of the next government,” he said.

Mr Dunne’s Agenda for Action is as follows:

Tax
Urgent priority to reducing the personal tax burden and simplifying the tax system
A more family friendly approach to tax, recognising the costs parents face in running a household

Health
Urgent programme to tackle current delays in access to elective surgery
Better personnel planning to ensure there are more cancer specialists, doctors, nurses and elder care workers
The continuation of subsidised doctors’ visits

Education
More support for schools’ operations
Making the NCEA work as intended
Tackling the mounting student debt mountain and improving student allowances

Law & Order
More Police on the beat
Tougher sentences for violent offenders
A crackdown on drugs

Superannuation
A better deal for older New Zealanders
Comprehensive elder-care policies

Conservation
More access to the great outdoors
A shake-up of the Department of Conservation

Social Engineering
No more social engineering
An end to political correctness and silly petty rules
