UF endorses National’s increased family emphasis

United Future deputy leader and family spokeswoman, Judy Turner, says she’s delighted the National Party has now accepted United Future’s long-held view that the family is the cornerstone of New Zealand society.

Launching National’s family policy today, Dr Don Brash promised to make Government more family-friendly, should National form the next government.

“We take this as affirmation that United Future has been on the right track for the past three years in asserting the primacy of the family when setting political priorities,” said Mrs Turner.

“Like National, United Future recognises that improving the income of working families is fundamental to strengthening them. National’s policies of tax cuts and rebates for the costs of childcare are a good start.

“National will do even better when they adopt United Future’s additional policies of income-splitting for tax purposes and adopting a tax-free threshold on the first $3000 of earned income.”

Mrs Turner said it was her understanding that National and United Future are happy to improve the work programmes of both the Families Commission and the Children’s Commissioner, by co-ordinating their complementary programmes and ensuring there are no wasteful overlaps.

“I’m pleased to see that United Future is putting its stamp on the core policies of the major parties,” said Mrs Turner.
