Sting Operation Launched On NOS Retailers
The joint sting operation by Police and Health enforcement officers of NOS retailers in Christchurch today represents a
step-up in the campaign against the sale of dangerous drugs, says Progressive leader Jim Anderton.
"Those that would try to sell nitrous oxide to vulnerable young people can't say they weren't warned.
"Following on from the unequivocal opinion given to me from the Crown Law Office in April that it is illegal to sell
nitrous oxide without a prescription, the Ministry of Health sent a letter to importers outlining the legal position.
"Importers and retailers were given time to quit their stocks lawfully and importers were given time to cancel any
orders, but that grace period is now over," Jim Anderton said.
"It is of course disappointing that in spite of the warnings, there remain a few dangerous drug sellers that are
prepared to break the law and to challenge society.
"These people should look themselves in the mirror because, as the Society of Anesthetists has stated, we are talking
about a substance with potentially very negative health implications if misused and those that try to break the law will
be prosecuted," Jim Anderton said.
The Progressive leader chairs the Ministerial Committee on Drugs.
