Whoops, another deadline missed

National’s statement today that they will not be revealing the details of their tax cuts until next week brings to three the number of promises they have broken in relation to the timing of their tax policy announcement,” Finance Minister Michael Cullen said.

“First it was going to be soon after the budget, then soon after the Prime Minister called the election, then voters were told they would have at least a month to analyse what National was offering.

“They have now missed that deadline too. Doesn’t inspire much confidence in their ability to keep their word, does it,” Dr Cullen said.

Party leader Don Brash told an Otago Chamber of Commerce meeting in Dunedin yesterday that its tax policy, the second-to last key policy to be announced before the election, would be outlined two to three weeks after Thursday’s budget. Health would be the last of the policy’s to be outlined.

National will bring in a tax system that rewards enterprise, rewards skill and rewards hard work…These policies will be announced within the next few weeks and will be aimed at mainstream New Zealand.

Tax policy could not be announced until after the budget…we will therefore announce our policy shortly. I've said within the next few weeks and we'll do that.

13 July 2005

We will put it out in our own good time. Ask Helen Clark when the election will be. At that point I will tell you exactly when we'll announce our tax policy. The public will have at least a month to assess our tax policy.
