Memorial service to celebrate David Lange

16 August 2005

Memorial service to celebrate the life of David Lange

Prime Minister Helen Clark said today that there will be a public memorial service for David Lange this Saturday in Auckland.

Helen Clark said that David Lange had requested a private, family funeral, but that the memorial service offered the opportunity for a public celebration of his life.

"David was an outstanding New Zealander, and many people have voiced a desire for a public service to mark their respect for a man who made such an impact on our country.

"David was a big-hearted man, and organisers of Saturday's service have received many offers of assistance from people all round New Zealand who would like to be involved in celebrating David's life.

"A number of people who knew and worked with David will speak at the service, including family, friends, colleagues from his legal and parliamentary careers, and community representatives.

"The service will be held at Auckland's Ericsson Stadium at 11am on Saturday 20 August. It will be followed by a public barbeque, with performances from local musicians," Helen Clark said.
