Young Crims Given Sanctuary Under Labour

New Zealand First Law and Order spokesperson Ron Mark has today expressed his dismay at the way young criminals are continuing to dodge prosecution due to their age.

His comments follow reports of a 13 year old Masterton male who has avoided prosecution following a high-speed car chase during which the car he was driving became airborne while reaching speeds of more than 100 kilometers per hour through quiet residential streets.

“This person was clearly aware of what he was doing and should have to face the consequences of his actions like any other young teenager who chooses to place innocent peoples lives at risk,” said Mr Mark.

Mr Mark has had a Members Bill in the ballot for over two years seeking the age of criminal responsibility to be lowered to 10 years of age for serious offences which would normally result in a prison term of over three months or a fine of more than $2000.

“It is clear that the youth justice system is too lenient towards such offenders and that the Police, by their own admission, are becoming frustrated due to being powerless to act in such cases.

“Will it take an innocent person’s death at the hands of a young offender before this Government acts to protect the public? I certainly hope not,” concluded Mr Mark.
