Maori Party speaks out against Scaremongering by NZ First
The Maori Party is horrified that Winston Peters today told a Grey Power audience that Islamic radicals present a danger to New Zealand society.
“The claim by Mr Peters that “Islam in New Zealand has two faces - a moderate face and a militant underbelly” is political posturing at its very worst” said Tariana Turia today.
“We totally support the right of the Muslim community to live in New Zealand, free from harassment, or racist attack” said Mrs Turia.
“It is ridiculous to fear a community on the basis of what might happen. Their situation is no different to anyone else who lives in this land” said Mrs Turia.
“It is ripe for Mr Peters to challenge the Muslim community that “those coming here must respect New Zealand traditions”.
“New Zealand traditions are also inclusive of kaupapa such as manaakitanga which are expressed in aroha, hospitality, generosity and mutual respect”.
“We must learn to live with, and trust each other, if we are to achieve peace. Mr Peter’s comments do nothing to achieve that goal”.
