Cancelled flights a sign of the times

National Party Industrial Relations spokesman Wayne Mapp says the cancellation of 14 international Air New Zealand flights tomorrow is a sign of the times under a ‘soft on unions’ Labour Government.

Industrial action will see eight outbound and six inbound international Air New Zealand flights cancelled tomorrow. Around 14,000 passengers will be affected.

Similar numbers of cancellations are expected on July 19, 21, 22, 24 and 25.

“National predicted this kind of disruptive union action would result from Labour’s employment legislation which gives preferential treatment to unions. National will remove that preference and bring sanity back to industrial law,” says Dr Mapp.

“If the unions were serious about boosting wage rates they would lobby their mates in the Labour Party to bring down taxes and boost productivity in the work place. This would give businesses and employers room to provide wage increases.

“The cancellation of these flights coupled with the draconian Holidays Act, which saw a third of bars and eateries close over the Christmas–New Year period, will leave potential visitors wondering if they should head elsewhere.”
