Forgiveness from victim - yes; but leniency? NO!
Forgiveness from victim - yes; but leniency? NO!
United Future law and order spokesman Marc Alexander says only victims have the moral authority to forgive, but society must act on behalf of future potential victims.
These comments come after Nathan John Moetara blindfolded, kidnapped, raped, sodomised and indecently assaulted a 66 year old woman, and then received a short 10 year sentence with a five year non-parole period in a New Plymouth court.
"Incredibly and with great heart and courage, the victim asked the judge to treat her attacker leniently...which in my opinion he did.
"I marvel at how the lady is able to show compassion after such a hideous attack.
“Nevertheless though she clearly has the moral authority to forgive, our justice system should not forget.
“The law must be applied not only in response to a punishment proportionate to the crime, but also to prevent future potential victims from this thug.
"To give this vicious sexual attacker an inch of mercy may well condemn another victim to the same fate. We simply cannot take the risk,” said Mr Alexander.
