“Hot on the heels of Maori success in golf, rugby, rugby sevens, women’s rugby, netball, and business; we have the Government moving to undermine Maori by using race as the basis for decision-making” stated Tariana Turia, co-leader of the Maori Party.
“Ethnicity has always been an important aspect to determine need” stated Mrs Turia.
“It is inappropriate for Government to be treating their Treaty partner in this way”.
‘Clearly the Prime Minister, who only a short time ago, saw Te Tiriti o Waitangi as the founding document of this nation, has now relegated the tangata whenua of this land to yet another ethnic minority in their own land”.
“The Labour Government is no different to National and New Zealand First in that there is no commitment to Te Tiriti o Waitangi, which now brings into question the legitimacy of Parliament and the right to govern”.
