Mallard hopes to fix NCEA with band-aid

National Party Education spokesman Bill English says Trevor Mallard is completely out of touch if he thinks a band-aid will cure the weeping sore that NCEA has become.

“Mr Mallard today announced his intention to fix the NCEA by sending teachers and boards of trustees to workshops and seminars, and sending parents a pamphlet.

“The Minister calls these seminars and workshops a ‘professional learning strategy’, which is a politically correct way of blaming teachers for the problems in his system.

“Labour still thinks the only thing wrong with NCEA is that parents, teachers and employers are too stupid to understand it.

“He is wrong.

“The crisis of confidence with the NCEA cannot be swept under the carpet. If Trevor Mallard thinks the problems with the system can be fixed by sending teachers to workshops and giving parents a bit of reading material, he is incredibly out of touch.

“Labour’s refusal to front up and deal with the real issues will further erode public confidence in our national secondary qualification.”

Mr English says the only sure way to fix the NCEA is to change the government.
