Ogilvy: Parent survey backs character education policy
A Colmar-Brunton poll released today showing that 84 percent of parents want local schools to teach local values is
smack-bang in line with United Future’s character education policy, the party’s education spokesman, Bernie Ogilvy, said
today.
The survey simply reinforced something that was already clear, Mr Ogilvy said.
“Parents want their kids brought up with decent values and they want schools to complement the work they do at home in
instilling strong values in their children.
“That’s why United Future continues to push so strongly for character education to be introduced into every school in
New Zealand.
“It is the expression of local values in school communities. It isn’t imposed from outside by Wellington bureaucrats,
but is chosen by the community to reflect the values they believe in - and of course, there will be a massive middle
ground of basic human values.”
The report was based on a survey of 1001 parents and commissioned by the Maxim Institute.
“United Future is the only political party that has promoted character education. It’s great to see new research backing
this. Now it’s time for the rest of Parliament to take notice of what parents want,” Mr Ogilvy said.
