Comprehensive police review needed - ACT

ACT Deputy Leader and Police spokesman Dr Muriel Newman today called for a top to bottom review of the New Zealand police.

Dr Newman said the devastating review of the police emergency 111 system, which revealed systemic failures in the police communication centres, was just the tip of the iceberg and highlighted the need for a complete evaluation of the police.

“The emergency 111 report was a very honest analysis of the crisis that has developed within the police communication centres,” Dr Newman said.

“All New Zealanders know there are catastrophic problems in the police which go deeper than the 111 emergency system.

“Police Minister George Hawkins and Police Commissioner Rob Robinson, in covering up the problems, have significantly failed the public and the New Zealand police.

“George Hawkins must ask the same people who undertook the 111 review to do a comprehensive review of the entire New Zealand police force.

“There is a huge level of frustration within the New Zealand police. Police officers are stressed out and repeat calls by the police themselves for extra resources have gone unanswered.
