Aussies show the way on tax cuts

Aussies show the way on tax cuts

ACT Leader Rodney Hide today called on Labour to follow Australia’s lead and use its record surplus to give workers a tax cut in the Budget.

Mr Hide was commenting on Australian Treasurer Peter Costello’s expected budget announcement of across the board tax cuts today.

“The Australian government is working with a projected budget surplus of $8 billion – the same as Labour’s, but with five times New Zealand’s population,” Mr Hide said.

“Finance Minister Michael Cullen could easily deliver a tax cut for every worker. It’s fair, affordable and Kiwis deserve it”.

Mr Hide said ACT is the only low-tax party in Parliament committed to delivering a tax cut for every worker. “ACT will drop the top personal and company tax rate to 25c in the dollar and drop the 21c rate to 15c. That’s a tax cut for every worker.

“Labour has been over-taxing hard-working Kiwis for years, and a tax cut for every worker is long overdue,” Mr Hide said.

A recent NBR poll revealed that 62 percent of New Zealanders believe they pay too much tax.
