Maharey admits failing those on the DPB

National Party Welfare spokeswoman Judith Collins says Steve Maharey is admitting that his administration is failing those on the DPB.

"It's a pity that it has taken so long for Labour to wake up to the fact that Work and Income is failing to deliver results for those who are on the DPB. National welcomes his change of heart," says Ms Collins.

She is responding to a programme announced today, that will see the Auckland Chamber of Commerce helping to find work for those in receipt of the Domestic Purposes Benefit.

"National has been saying for years that more community and business groups should be brought into a partnership arrangement to get more of those who are receiving a benefit into work.

"National also proposes a 90 day no obligation probation period, that would allow business to offer opportunities to those who might otherwise be considered too risky.

"National will also require DPB recipients to be available for part-time work or training when their youngest child reaches school age, and full-time work or training when that child reaches 14," says Ms Collins.
