Labour cannot be trusted with Treaty deadline
National Party Leader Don Brash says Helen Clark and Labour cannot be trusted to put an end to the Treaty grievance
industry.
His comments follow those of Helen Clark to Labour’s annual congress that Labour was committed to setting a date by
which all Treaty claims must be lodged.
Dr Brash says this is nothing more than election year puffery.
“Labour has suggested a lodgement deadline before without ever naming a date, so it’s hard to take this comment
seriously.
“New Zealanders want an end to the Treaty grievance process. They want to see the wrongs of the past put right in the
short term – they want to know when all claims will be lodged and when they will be settled.
“Only when this has happened will New Zealand stop looking back and move forward as a unified and prosperous nation.
Labour is not offering this.
“National will provide the leadership required to make this happen. As I have said repeatedly, we will ensure all Treaty
claims are lodged by the end of 2006 and settled, fully and finally, by 2010,” says Dr Brash.
