Talented Kiwis dominate Labour list

Despite Wellington fog causing delays and a change of city for the Labour Party list conference, the selection itself,
whilst hard fought, was conducted with good humour and respect, according to Labour Party President Mike Williams.
The 37 member team had been set to determine the all important party list on Saturday 19 March but heavy fog in the
capital closed the airport making the meeting impossible.
On Sunday the group reconvened in Auckland and after a late start due to Wellington weather, the selection process
lasted most of the day.
In a well signaled move, Waitangi Fisheries Tribunal Chairman Shane Jones was parachuted into the ranks of sitting MPs
at number 27. Employment Relations Manager Maryan Street was also ranked amidst the Caucus members at position 36 on the
list.
“We have a team of extremely skilled New Zealanders coming on board to add to the wealth of talent currently in Cabinet
and Caucus,” says Mr Williams.
“I’m proud that Labour reflects the changing face of New Zealand with Chinese New Zealander Steven Ching placed 42 on
the list, a place that should assure the business leader a seat in House.
“The make-up of the Labour team means Labour will continue as a capable government committed to New Zealand taking its
place with pride among first world nations.”
Mike Williams says the Party list reflects Labour’s standing as a broad-based social democratic party.
