DoC should focus on its core tasks
National’s Conservation spokesman, Simon Power, says he shares the concerns of Forest and Bird about DoC’s handling of its core responsibilities, and looks forward to their support to refocus the department.
“National will ensure DoC sticks to its core responsibilities.
“DoC is struggling to look after our endangered flora and fauna. Labour should be more concerned with figures in the department’s annual report that show 77% of up to 800 indigenous species listed as ‘acutely and chronically threatened’ aren’t being effectively protected by DoC, rather than putting it in charge of South Island high country farms.”
The department’s annual report shows that in the past year it failed to meet 21 of its 35 self-imposed natural heritage targets, and four of its five historic heritage targets.
“DoC has already proven to be a lousy caretaker, slapping a padlock on the gate of Birchwood Station immediately after taking control of it in the name of public access,” says Mr Power.
”We look forward to the support of Forest and Bird in holding DoC to task after the next election.”
