Commissioner Must Act
Commissioner Must Act
New Zealand First law and order spokesperson Ron Mark is calling for the Police Commissioner to come clean over reports in today’s Herald of a stand-off between general duties staff and traffic police, when the latter refused to help over-taxed colleagues on a “night of mayhem” in Counties-Manukau.
“If this report is substantiated it goes against arguments made by the Commissioner and the Minister of Police earlier this week that all units are to be available to respond to emergencies or when other staff need back up,” said Mr Mark.
“It just confirms what New Zealand First have been saying all along, that despite the plethora traffic units, general duties staff are being let down by their colleagues, and by a Commissioner who continues to ignore the situation.”
“What confidence can the public or front-line police have in a Commissioner and a Minister who are so clearly out of touch with reality and those at the sharp end?
“The Commissioner must act, and act now,” concluded Mr Mark.
