ACT slams Labour's election year vote-buying

Tuesday 8 Feb 2005

Dr Muriel Newman Press Releases -- Social Welfare

ACT Deputy Leader and Social Welfare spokesman Dr Muriel Newman today accused the Labour Government of election year vote-buying.

The MP was responding to the launch of a taxpayer-funded, multi-million dollar TV, radio and newspaper campaign to promote Labour's Working for Families package.

"This is simply a Labour election year vote-buying exercise to retain the baubles of power after the next election," Dr Newman said.

"I am confident that New Zealanders will see this pro-Labour propaganda for what it really is - a naked grab for power.

Dr Newman said ACT opposed the Working for Families package because it will create a culture of middle-class welfare dependency. "A tax cut to boost their household income would make more sense," she said.

"It is a disgraceful misuse of taxpayers' money that should be treated with absolute contempt," Dr Newman said.
