Control Needed On Crossbows

New Zealand law and order spokesperson Ron Mark today called for an urgent law change to bring crossbow ownership under the same regulations as firearms.

“I am concerned at the increased use of crossbows by criminals. At present, anyone can buy a bow or a crossbow. No licence is needed, nor is there any vetting process by police to ascertain that the purchaser is a fit and proper person,” said Mr Mark.

Mr Mark called for crossbows to be included under the Arms Act, which would prevent the sale of a crossbow to anyone not in possession of a firearms licence.

“At present the most serious offence anyone can be charged with is possession of an offensive weapon, but these device have a high velocity and can kill, or maim at a range of 60 yards.

“The latest hunting arrows and bolts that are available might also be able to defeat modern body armour, and as such they could pose a serious threat to police.

“Given the upsurge in their use by criminal elements, it is obviously time for an amendment to the law so that crossbows are treated in the same way as firearms,” said Mr Mark.
