Labour should’ve seen poor turn-out coming

The National Party is promising a single voting system for future local body elections.

“The confusing mix of STV, FPP and MMP-style voting introduced into local elections by Labour has proven to be a dismal failure,” says National’s Local Government spokesman Nick Smith.

“This is another example of the Government’s political correctness gone wrong. Labour’s new law requiring District Health Boards to be on STV while allowing district, city and regional councils to choose between FPP, STV and MMP-style voting, is a recipe for confusion.

“Many voters, when faced with three voting papers with three different systems, have given up in despair.

“National will introduce some common sense into local elections by providing a single system of voting.

“We will consult widely on which system is preferred and make a decision on the basis of that which, based on evidence, ensures the widest participation of electors.

“Labour’s local election policy has failed because it ignored the old KISS principle - Keep it Simple Stupid,” says Dr Smith.
