Associate Arts, Culture and Heritage Minister Judith Tizard said today she was saddened to learn of the death of New Zealand artist Pat Hanly, after a long struggle against Huntington's disease.

"The news of Pat's death is very sad. He made a huge contribution to New Zealand art. He had a passion for both painting and print-making and has been a wonderful teacher to many people."

"Pat is widely regarded as one of our leading modernist painters. His work is displayed in many galleries around New Zealand. He also created wonderful murals for Auckland Airport, the University of Auckland and the Aotea Centre.
