Copeland welcomes Mighty River Marsden initiative
United Future energy spokesman Gordon Copeland today welcomed the announcement from Mighty River Power that it wants to fire up the Marsden B power station near Whangarei, adding another 320 MW of electricity to the nation’s supply.
Marsden B was originally built in 1978 to run on oil, but has never been commissioned. It has access to an existing grid distribution system and is handily placed to supply Auckland’s growing power needs.
Mighty River plans to apply for resource consent to commission the station and run it on coal. The station could be up and running in 3 – 5 years.
Mr Copeland said “New Zealand needs more electricity generation and I welcome this announcement which will give a significant boost to New Zealand’s growth prospects.”
