Labour's first round of nominations have closed

Labour's first round of nominations have closed with all sitting Labour MPs re-nominated without opposition.

In those seats where sitting MPs have announced their retirement at the 2005 election, three nominations have been received for Wairarapa, for Ian Dunwoodie, Bob Francis and Denise MacKenzie; and two for Invercargill for Wayne Harpur and Lesley Soper. Moana Mackey MP is the sole nomination for East Coast.

Labour also called for nominations in its first round for Kaikoura and Tamaki. Two nominations have been received in Tamaki for Leila Boyle and David Maka. Brendon Burns was the sole nominee for Kaikoura.

The Party's New Zealand Council decided at its meeting on Saturday 31st July that as a matter of policy there will be at least a month's gap allowed between notice of retirement for a sitting MP and close of nominations. Accordingly nominations will be held open in Invercargill for another two weeks, closing on 13 August.

The Council will now proceed to make arrangements with the local electorate committees to proceed to selection in Tamaki and Wairarapa, and Invercargill after the 13th of August. Confirmation meetings will be held in East Coast and the other Labour-held seats in accordance with the terms of the Party constitution.
