Commerce (Michelle Malyon, SC-Commerce@parliament.govt.nz)

The committee next meets on 22 July to further its consideration of the 2004/05 Estimates; this meeting will not be open to the public.

Finance and Expenditure (Peter Hurndell, SC-FE@parliament.govt.nz)

The committee did not meet this week. The committee is next scheduled to meet on 21 July to further consider the 2004/05 Estimates of Appropriations Votes: Audit, Finance, Revenue, State-Owned Enterprises, Arts, Culture and Heritage, and Immigration. The committee is also scheduled to consider the Public Finance (State Sector Management) Bill, and is expected to complete its hearing of submissions on the Taxation (Annual Rates, Venture Capital and Miscellaneous Provisions) Bill.

Fisheries and Other Sea-related Legislation (Miles Reay SC-MA@parliament.govt.nz,)

The committee will meet on 13, 14, and 15 July to continue consideration of the Maori Fisheries Bill.

Submissions on the Foreshore and Seabed Bill close on Monday, 12 July.

Foreign Affairs, Defence and Trade (David Sanders, SC-FD@parliament.govt.nz)

The committee did not meet this week. It plans to meet next week on 15 July to hear further evidence on 2004/05 Estimates for Votes Foreign Affairs and Trade, Official Development Assistance, Defence, and Defence Force.

Government Administration (Lesley Ferguson, SC-GA@parliament.govt.nz)

On 6 July the committee reported to the House on the Building Bill, with the recommendation that the bill be passed, by majority, and with amendments. The bill follows the committee’s inquiry into the Weathertightness of Buildings in New Zealand. The majority of the committee supported the integrated package of regulatory controls provided for in the bill, and, like submitters, also supported the overall intent of the bill, including its focus on improving the quality of inputs into building. The majority also supported the scheme of enhanced responsibilities and liabilities that the bill establishes with regard to building work. The committee next meets on 15 July to consider the 2004/05 Estimates for the various votes referred to it for examination and to consider the Statutes Amendment Bill (No 4) and the Films, Videos, and Publications Amendment Bill.

Health (Catherine Parkin, SC-Health@parliament.govt.nz)

The committee did not meet this week. On 21 July the committee will hear evidence from the Associate Minister of Health, Hon Ruth Dyson, on the 2004/05 Estimates for Vote Health. This will be from 9.00 am to 9.30 am, in Parliament House, and will be open to the public. The committee will also consider other items of business.

Law and Order (Tracey Rayner, SC-LO@parliament.govt.nz)

The committee did not meet this week.

The committee’s next meeting is scheduled for 14 July to consider and hear evidence on the 2004/05 Estimates for Vote Courts. The Minister for Courts, Hon Rick Barker and Secretary for Justice, Belinda Clark will give evidence at the hearing, which will be open to the public from 10.00 am to 11.30 am.

Local Government and Environment (Beth Watson, SC-LGE@parliament.govt.nz)

The committee will next meet on 22 July to continue both its consideration of its inquiry into the alleged accidental release of genetically engineered sweet corn plants in 2000 and subsequent actions taken and its examination of the 2004/05 Estimates. It will hear evidence on Vote Environment from 11.00 am until noon. It will consider both Vote Environment and Vote Climate Change and Energy Efficiency.

Submissions for the Wellington Regional Council (Water Board Functions) Bill close on 18 August.

Maori Affairs (Miles Reay, SC-MA@parliament.govt.nz)

The committee will meet on 15 July to consider the 2004/05 Estimates for Vote Maori Affairs, and hear evidence on the 2004/05 Estimates for Vote Treaty Negotiations. The latter part of the meeting will be open to the public between approximately 10.30 am and 11.30 am.

Primary Production (Bob Bunch, SC-PP@parliament.govt.nz)

The committee’s next meeting will be on 22 July from 9.30 am to 5.00 pm. It will consider and hear evidence on Vote Lands, and further consider Votes Agriculture and Forestry, Biosecurity, Fisheries, and Food Safety in the examination of the 2004/05 Estimates. The committee will also consider and hear evidence on the Fisheries Amendment Bill (No.3).

Social Services (Graham Hill, SC-SS@parliament.govt.nz)

The committee met on 8 July to hear evidence on the 2004/05 Estimates for Votes Child, Youth, and Family Services and Employment. At the next meeting on 22 July the committee will consider all the votes allocated to it by the Finance and Expenditure Committee, hear evidence on the Parental Leave and Employment Protection Amendment Bill, consider further the Social Security (Long-term Residential Care) Amendment Bill and start the hearing of evidence on the Charities Bill. The committee will be hearing evidence on the Charities Bill from Wellington-based sector organisations. The committee encourages other interested submitters to attend the meeting and listen to the evidence given by the sector organisations.

Transport and Industrial Relations (Kath Henderson, SC-TI@parliament.govt.nz)

The committee will next meet on 22 July to further consider the 2004/05 Estimates for Votes Transport, ACC and Labour, the Employment Relations Law Reform Bill and the Railways Bill. The meeting will not be open to the public.
