Auckland Bill OK For Now
New Zealand First Local Government and Environment spokesperson Jim Peters said that his party was pleased to finally be able to support the Local Government (Auckland) Amendment Bill.
“The original bill which came to the House lacked explicitness, particularly with regard to the role of the Auckland Regional Land Transport Committee and the place of the Auckland Regional Land Transport Strategy,” said local government spokesman Jim Peters.
“The final version shows the Minister for Local Government’s acceptance of the need for greater clarity, both in the role of the Auckland Regional Council and local authorities and in the operational role of ARTA.
“However, it should be noted and acknowledged that this is just the first step, and not a final cure-all for Auckland. It’s merely an opportunity to work toward the first phase of an integrated transport system for the region.
“The transport needs of Auckland are in a constant state of change and growth and this requires a proactive development and funding approach,” said Mr Peters.
