Labour driven further into the arms of the Greens

Gerry Brownlee MP National Party Deputy Leader

04 June 2004

Labour driven further into the arms of the Greens

"Labour will be forced further into the arms of those on the extreme left following the Greens' pre-emptive concession of defeat in the electorates," according to National Party Deputy Leader Gerry Brownlee.

"The Greens are so desperate to make sure Labour stays in power they are prepared to risk their own political existence.

"If Labour wins, Helen Clark would undoubtedly reward that loyalty with more crazy concessions in legislation, like those favours already dished out in transport and energy infrastructure.

"Labour would again be beholden to the Greens, who will inevitably seek some kind of politically correct pay-back when the time is right.

"It is fascinating that at this early stage Labour and the Greens are doing electoral deals. It tells us there will be significant future dealings over legislation."

Mr Brownlee says "all New Zealanders should be asking what price Labour will pay to keep the Greens onside?"
