National shouldn't pander to lawbreakers

1 June 2004

Hon Matt Robson MP, Progressive Deputy Leader

National should uphold rule of law, not pander to lawbreakers

National Party leader Don Brash needs to tell New Zealanders whether the conservative party upholds the law or favours disorder, Progressive MP Matt Robson said today.

"National's Law & Disorder spokesman, Tony Ryall, issued an equivocal statement yesterday which makes it unclear as to whether National supports the police force, whether National supports the law, and whether National is in the least bit serious about confronting the death and injuries caused by law-breakers on our roads," Matt Robson said.

"Tony Ryall issued a silly statement starting with four irresponsible words: 'Confidence in police drops'.

"There are some issues that even the grubbiest of political parties shouldn't play games with. This is one of them. The police should be supported in the national campaign to lower the terrible death and destruction caused on our roads by law-breakers," Matt Robson said.
