Budget Mustn't Ignore Rural New Zealand

Budget Mustn't Ignore Rural New Zealand

Tuesday 25 May 2004

Gerry Eckhoff - Press Releases - Rural

Rural New Zealand will be expecting the Labour Government to recognise the importance of primary industries to our economy in Thursday's Budget, ACT New Zealand Rural Affairs Spokesman Gerry Eckhoff said today.

"The Budget surplus, in large part generated by our land and sea-based industries, has enabled Finance Minister Dr Michael Cullen to become a sugar daddy to those on low and medium incomes," Mr Eckhoff said.

"An increase in the public good science fund is an obvious way for the Government to recognise the huge importance of the primary industries.

"The Government should also expand the numbers involved in expanding trade opportunities around the world - too few people are currently engaged in this most vital of government functions.

"Farmers aren't looking for handouts, as the rural industry is largely self-reliant. However, they will be looking for recognition of their role as the wealth creators of this country," Mr Eckhoff said.
