Three strikes and you’re out - time to release Ahmed Zaoui
It is time to put politics aside and rely on the law says Progressive deputy leader Matt Robson, welcoming the news that the High Court has removed Inspector-General Laurie Grieg from the case of the refugee Ahmed Zaoui.
“The Refugee Status Appeals Authority decision that Mr Zaoui is a genuine refugee has never been appealed. Today’s decision removing Laurie Grieg is the third High Court case won by Mr Zaoui in his fight to have a fair hearing – three from three is a victory any way you look at it.
“Three strikes and you’re out is a common saying. It should apply to Mr Zaoui. He should be released from his 16 months of detention so he can adequately prepare his defence to the allegations made by the Security Intelligence Service.
“The Minister in Charge of the SIS should now put the law and fair dealing ahead of any political factors,” said Matt Robson.
