Dunne welcomes public backing

United Future leader Peter Dunne today complimented the commonsense of New Zealand voters for overwhelmingly backing United Future’s proposal for a wide-ranging inquiry into New Zealand’s constitutional arrangements, and the role therein of the Treaty of Waitangi.

“The weekend’s poll, which showed 69% of all voters want an inquiry, sends a very clear message to Wellington, which politicians will ignore at their peril.

“United Future has always argued that the inquiry has to be wide-ranging and cover all aspects of New Zealand’s constitution, not just the Treaty, and I am delighted most New Zealanders endorse that view,” he said.

“The poll, even more tellingly, says 68% of National voters want an inquiry, which shows Dr Brash is out of step with his own supporters. I urge him to reconsider his opposition to the inquiry in the interests of New Zealand.”

“New Zealand’s future constitutional arrangements are too important to be decided without the participation of the maximum possible number of New Zealanders.

“United Future will continue working to achieve a broad inquiry, free from direct political influence, or backroom deals to ensure New Zealanders can have their say.

“National should give up short-term considerations for the long-term benefit of New Zealand,” said Mr Dunne.
