Swain seeks mediator for Upper Hutt schools

The Rimutaka MP Paul Swain has formally requested the Education Minister Trevor Mallard appoint a mediator to re-examine the network review of schools in Upper Hutt and Stokes Valley.

Mr Swain says that given the moratorium on further reviews announced last week, the review process that is already underway in Upper Hutt and Stokes Valley needs a major rethink.

Mr Swain says "the idea of someone coming in to have a fresh look and carry out an independent assessment and make recommendations would be helpful."

He says he has spent a lot of time talking to members of the Upper Hutt and Stokes Valley communities about the review, and there is a strong sentiment that the whole issue needs a rethink.

Mr Swain says he will be working with the community and representatives of the school boards to come up with a proposal.

"One of the useful results from the network review has been the proposal for the intermediates and colleges in Upper Hutt. It involves four boards continuing to oversee the schools, with a committee of chairs taking a strategic overview, and is a smart solution."

Mr Swain says he hopes the appointment of a mediator could be made as soon as possible, so the independent assessment can get underway quickly.
