A victory for the rule of law in the Zaoui case
The news that the lawyers for detained former Algerian MP and refugee, Ahmed Zaoui, have won their case in the High Court seeking details of the allegations made against Mr Zaoui is a victory for the rule of law, Progressive MP Matt Robson says.
"In his finding, Justice Williams ruled there is every reason to grant Ahmed Zaoui the relief he seeks because 'it is a fundamental right in a free and democratic society' to know any allegations that are laid against you," Matt Robson said.
"This ruling is a victory for common sense and for the rule of law," he said.
New Zealand is a voluntary signatory to international agreements on human rights and it is an absolute requirement that government agencies take into account international human rights agreements that New Zealand has entered, Matt Robson said.
