ACT New Zealand Police Spokesman Dr Muriel Newman today welcomed the Government's U-turn on its previously unworkable road safety package.
"It is encouraging to see that common sense has won through, and the Government is now focusing on improving the safety of roading and targeting dangerous drivers," Dr Newman said.
"Many motor accidents are caused by dangerous roads. Improving these would ensure the most effective, sustainable reduction of the road toll. Kiwis could be the safest drivers in the world, but this would count for nought if our roads aren't up to scratch.
"Poor roads are costing more lives than drink driving. I suggest that Transport Minister Paul Swain put pressure on local authorities to maintain the safety of local roads.
"I also urge the Minister to use more of the petrol tax revenue collected from motorists for improving the safety of roads, instead of siphoning it off into the consolidated fund.
"The Government's intention to crack down on repeat drink drivers, and to extend surveillance to the drug testing of motorists are welcome initiatives, especially as I understand from the Police that more and more road accidents involve drivers who are suspected of using the drug `P' - this figure could be as high as 20 percent in some regions
"The public has long been concerned that this government is more concerned about revenue gathering from motorists, rather than improving road safety - the Minister's new announcements will be watched with close interest," Dr Newman said.
