PM is a typical fair weather friend

With the Government's announcement on the foreshore and seabed just days away, the Prime Minister is showing herself to be a typical fair weather friend, according to National Party Maori Affairs spokeswoman Georgina te Heuheu.

"When there's a storm brewing on the horizon, she's nowhere to be seen and has nothing to say.

"But when the climate was warmer, she was only too happy to spend days on marae up and down the country, selling her Government's double-speak," says Mrs te Heuheu.

"Helen Clark is a classic fair weather friend, who has been conspicuous by her absence from talks over the foreshore and seabed.

"But her silence is speaking volumes to both Maori and non-Maori alike.

"And her Government's plan to deny the New Zealand Parliament a timely opportunity to debate the foreshore and seabed package, underlines that suspicion.

"Helen Clark should have moved to clear up the confusion long ago - she has had plenty of opportunities to do so.

"Instead she's raised expectations and shown New Zealand, especially Maori, that Labour's instincts for pork barrel politics are alive and well," Mrs te Heuheu says.
