Minister admits leaky homes legislation flawed

The Government has acknowledged its Weathertight Home Resolution Services Act is a disaster, says National's Housing spokesman David Carter.

In response to questioning, Commerce Minister Lianne Dalziel acknowledged lawyers are the only people winning from the Government's leaky homes legislation. 'People have spent considerable amount of money on lawyers instead of on getting their houses fixed' she said.

"The Government's legislation is failing to solve the leaky homes fiasco. Labour promised in a 'speedy, flexible and cost effective' process. It's not delivering," says Mr Carter.

"It's certainly not speedy. To date, of the 2,105 active claims lodged over a year ago, only 45 have been resolved.

"And it's not cost effective. One couple has spent $16,000 attempting adjudication, leaving them with no money to fix their home.

"Having raised the hopes of leaky homeowners the Government must now sort it out," says Mr Carter.
