Ward flattened by Trent's bulldozer
Green MP Mike Ward said today that a visit from a Tasman District Council compliance officer might not be enough to dissuade American property developer Alan Trent from carving up the countryside - but confiscating his bulldozer would.
Mr Ward, a former Nelson City Councillor, said Mr Trent's recent bulldozing of a ravine down through the cliffs has ignited a public fury that would not be healed by a few stern words from a council worker.
"Alan Trent's latest foray with the bulldozer may be within the letter of the law as provided for in Variation 25 but it certainly is not within the spirit of its intention," said Mr Ward.
"This latest action highlights the urgency over the need to notify Variation 33 giving protection the Kina Cliffs.
"In the past, while I have shared the public frustration and dismay at Mr Trent's activities, I have been prepared to put it down to his lack of appreciation of the Kiwi culture.
"He seems oblivious to the discontent he has caused to local residents - it is now time to confiscate Mr Trent's bulldozer."
