Thursday 4 Dec 2003 Richard Prebble Press Releases -- Immigration
ACT Leader Richard Prebble is to set down a notice of motion next week for parliament to condemn Winston Peters' anti-Asian immigration pamphlet.
"The pamphlet is designed to promote racial discord," said Mr Prebble.
"The Pamphlet's claims are false. Government statistics prove that Asian immigrants make very little use of social welfare benefits. The people on benefits are overwhelmingly New Zealand born.
"Asian people are hard working, taxpaying, law abiding, good citizens.
"Asians are under-represented in our hospital beds and in our prisons. Asian doctors and nurses keep our hospitals going.
"One area Asians are over-represented in is the number being dux of our schools.
"New Zealand is a better country thanks to Asian immigration.
"I am disappointed that Labour and National have not defended Asian New Zealanders.
"The ACT Party is prepared to stand up to Mr Peters and tell our fellow New Zealanders that he is wrong.
"We all need to fight racism," Mr Prebble said.
