There were three committee meetings, all in the parliamentary complex, and one site visit.

Commerce (Michelle Malyon, SC-Commerce@parliament.govt.nz)

The committee did not meet this week. It will next meet on Thursday, 6 November to consider and hear evidence on the financial reviews of the Ministry of Economic Development and the New Zealand Venture Investment Fund. It will also continue to hear evidence on the Shop Trading Hours Act Repeal Act (Abolition of Restrictions) Amendment Bill. All hearings will be open to the public.

Education and Science (Angela Van Dam, SC-ES@parliament.govt.nz)

The committee will meet on Wednesday, 5 November to hear evidence on the inquiry into teacher education and the 2002/03 financial review of the Education Review Office. The committee will also consider the inquiry into decile funding in New Zealand State and integrated schools.

Finance and Expenditure (Peter Hurndell, SC-FE@parliament.govt.nz)

The committee did not meet this week. It is scheduled to meet on Wednesday, 5 November when it will hear evidence from the Minister of Finance on the Crown Financial Statements, and from the Secretary of The Treasury for the financial review of The Treasury. The committee also intends to consider the financial reviews of the Inland Revenue Department and the Office of the Controller and Auditor-General. The Taxation (Annual Rates, GST, Trans Tasman Imputation and Miscellaneous Provisions) Bill will also undergo further consideration.

The meeting will be open to the public for the hearings on the Crown Financial Statements and the financial review of The Treasury. Indicative times for the hearings of evidence are between 10.00 am and 11.30 am.

Government Administration (Lesley Ferguson, SC-GA@parliament.govt.nz)

Last week the committee reported on the 2002/03 financial reviews of the government departments and Crown entities about which it had no matters to bring to the attention of the House. Today the committee undertakes a site visit of the Port of Napier and the Richmond Pacific Beef plant in relation to the Border Security Bill.

Health (Catherine Parkin, SC-Health@parliament.govt.nz)

The committee did not meet this week. It will meet next Wednesday, 5 November to consider a number of items. It will hear evidence from the Ministry of Health on its 2002/03 financial review. This will be open to the public from 10.30 am to 12.45 pm in Room G.002, Parliament House.

Justice and Electoral (Louise Sparrer, SC-JE@parliament.govt.nz)

The committee met on Thursday, 30 October to hear evidence on the Care of Children Bill and to consider its financial reviews for 2002/03, and on Friday, 31 October to continue to hear evidence on the Care of Children Bill.

The committee will meet next week on Wednesday, 5 November. It will consider its inquiry into the 2002 General Election and its inquiry into section 55 of the Electoral Act 1993, hear evidence on the 2002/03 financial review of the Ministry of Justice, and hear evidence on the Lawyers and Conveyancers Bill. The meeting will be open to the public for the hearing on the financial review from 11.30 am to 1.00 pm, and for the hearing on the Lawyers and Conveyancers Bill from 3.30pm to 6.00pm and from 7.00pm to 9.30pm.

The committee will also meet on Thursday, 6 November to continue hearing evidence on the Lawyers and Conveyancers Bill. It will be open to the public from 3.30 pm to 6.00 pm.

Law and Order (Tracey Rayner, SC-LO@parliament.govt.nz)

The committee met this week to further consider the Corrections Bill, the 2002/03 financial reviews, and also receive a public briefing from the Audit Office on the report entitled Co-ordination and Collaboration in the Criminal Justice Sector.

The committee will next meet on Wednesday, 5 November from 9.00am to 1.00pm, and again from 3.30 pm to 5.30 pm, when it will consider the Telecommunications (Interception Capability) Bill, the Independent Police Complaints Authority Amendment Bill, the Corrections Bill, and the 2002/03 financial review of the Department for Courts.

The meeting will be open to the public from 9.45 am to 10.45 am for a hearing of evidence from the Department for Courts on the 2002/03 financial review of the Department for Courts, and again from 11.00 am to 12 noon for a public briefing from the Office of the Ombudsmen on ‘The role of the Ombudsmen in the prison service’, which is being given to assist the committee with its consideration of the Corrections Bill.

Local Government and Environment (Marie Alexander, SC-LGE@parliament.govt.nz)

The committee will next meet on Monday, 3 November, from 2.00 pm to 10.00 pm to consider and hear submissions on the Resource Management (Energy and Climate Change) Amendment Bill. The meeting will be in Room G.003, Parliament House and will be open to the public from 2.20 pm. The committee will also meet on Thursday, 6 November to consider the inquiry into the alleged accidental release of genetically engineered sweet corn plants in 2000 and subsequent actions taken. This will not be open to the public. However, on that day the committee will also consider and hear submissions on the Wellington City Council (Te Aro Reclamation) Amendment Bill in Room G.003, Parliament House and this will be open to the public from 11.00 am to 12 noon.

Maori Affairs (Miles Reay, SC-MA@parliament.govt.nz)

The committee did not meet this week. It will next meet on Thursday, 6 November when it will hear evidence for the financial review of Te Puni Kôkiri, and further consider the Ngati Tama Claims Settlement Bill.

Primary Production (Bob Bunch, SC-PP@parliament.govt.nz)

The committee met on Thursday, 23 October to consider its inquiry into the administration and management of the scampi fishery. It will meet again on Monday, 3 November and Thursday, 6 November to give further consideration to the inquiry.

Social Services (Graham Hill, SC-SS@parliament.govt.nz)

The committee will meet on Thursday, 6 November, when it will begin its series of financial reviews by examining the Department of Child, Youth and Family Services.

Transport and Industrial Relations (Kath Henderson, SC-TI@parliament.govt.nz)

The committee will consider the Civil Aviation Amendment Bill on Thursday, 6 November.
