Alexander: Paedophile supervision a tragic joke

Just four months after United Future's Marc Alexander publicly questioned whether there would be increased supervision of released sex offenders, the paroled paedophile at the centre of his concerns at the time has been convicted of assaulting an intellectually handicapped woman - while his probation supervisor stood waiting outside his bedroom.

"You never want to be right in these cases, but tragically in a society such as ours, where the offenders rights are for all intents and purposes paramount, the critics are right yet again," Mr Alexander, United Future's law and order spokesman, said after Lloyd Alexander McIntosh was returned to prison.

"The court was told that his probation supervisor waited outside the Palmerston North man's bedroom as the man attacked the woman because he felt that he couldn't go into the room without the man's consent.

"It's finally happened - the lunatics are running the asylum.

"And I'm not having a go at this individual personally, but we have to ask how we are running the justice system and the parole system when a twice-convicted paedophile has 'rights' to privacy of this sort.

"The woman had a right not to be assaulted by this seriously troubled individual. Everything in law, every manner of application needs to be targeted on her rights."

"This man has the right to be locked up and have the key thrown away. It was only years of weak, pussy-footing legislation that let him out in the first place," Mr Alexander said.

In June, police had to ask McIntosh's permission before warning neighbours about his arriving in their neighbourhood.
