Mainstream National Signs Its Death Warrant

Jim Anderton: Mainstream Party of Government Signs Its Death Warrant

The National Party, once a mainstream party of government, has today signed its own death warrant, Progressive Party leader, Jim Anderton, said today.

By selecting Don Brash as its new leader, it is on the road to winning closer to 5% of the popular vote rather than to ever lead a government again, Jim Anderton said.

The only party likely to be fully celebrating the news is the ACT Party.

"It will be celebrating that Don Brash has been selected to lead the conservative parties into the next general election.

"The ACT Party will be excited that they have an ally in their plans to destroy New Zealand's nuclear-free and independent foreign policy. ACT will also be happy that they have a National Party ally in their campaign to complete Richard Prebble's Unfinished Business of selling our publicly owned assets, including Kiwibank," the Progressive Party leader said.

"NZ First and United must say well before people vote in 2005 whether they remain open to supporting a National-ACT administration now that we know that means installing a Don Brash-Richard Prebble duo who espouse policies that are completely at odds with so much of everything Winston Peters and Peter Dunne have ever said they stand for," the Progressive Party leader said.
