Supreme Court change not irreversible
The call by the president of the New Zealand Bar Association to back the new Supreme Court, and his comment that it's "irreversible" is unfortunate, says National's Justice spokesman, Richard Worth.
"The Centre Right parties plan to scrap the Court and reinstate the link with the Privy Council in 2005.
"While they will need the cooperation of the British Government to achieve this, New Zealanders should assume the support will be forthcoming," says Mr Worth.
"The decision to establish the Supreme Court is purely political and is contrary to all reasoned argument. This was the view supported by the Bar Association itself - yet now it flip-flops.
"To claim that the 'separation of powers
between the executive and judiciary' is somehow the hallmark
of sound appointment processes overlooks the fact that
judges are appointed on the recommendation of the Attorney
General, who is herself an activist politician and a member
of Cabinet," says Mr Worth.
