Nat's Nuke Policy As Credible As Its Iraq Stance

National & allies' nuclear policy as credible as their Iraq stance

The National Party's call for nuclear ships to visit New Zealand is part of an overall strategy by the right wing Opposition to dismantle New Zealand's nuclear-free and independent foreign policy, Matt Robson said today.

"In my presence, National, ACT and NZ First spokespeople have made no secret of their intentions," the Progressive Party deputy leader said.

"Bill English's spilling of the beans on 1ZB that we should 'invite U.S. ships here' is further evidence of that cross-party talk on the Right," Matt Robson said.

"This also explains their enthusiastic support for the recent speech of the U.S. ambassador about so-called 'unfinished business' between our two countries," Matt Robson said.

"National and its allies should be totally upfront about their intentions for foreign policy well before people vote in the next election," Matt Robson said.

"And New Zealanders should have no faith at all in the judgement of the right wing parties. Earlier this year, for example, they said the government should send young New Zealanders to risk their lives in Mr Bush's war on Iraq in pursuit of weapons of mass destruction that existed only in the minds of those who needed an excuse for the war," Matt Robson said.
