Dunne: Why are we (still) waiting?
Ohariu-Belmont MP and United Future leader, Peter Dunne, says the weekend’s weather disaster on the Kapiti coast has exposed the faulty thinking behind the continued delays in getting the Transmission Gully route out of Wellington started.
“While the Government continues to play footsie with bicycle-riding, walking Greens over details of land transport legislation, the nation suffers through the economic disruption caused by the closure of the only major route out of the capital,” he says.
“Thousands of people had their lives and businesses severely disrupted because some bean-counter somewhere has decided that Transmission Gully does not meet some abstract cost-benefit analysis.
“Where is the benefit to New Zealand, and what are the costs, of having the capital city isolated through natural and foreseeable events?” he demanded.
“Transmission Gully is a project that must be fast-tracked immediately – the nation needs it,” says Mr Dunne.
