Government Leaves Elderly Out In The Cold
“It is shocking to hear that some senior citizens are not turning on heaters because of the constant hikes in
electricity prices,” said New Zealand First senior citizens spokesperson, Barbara Stewart.
Age Concern has reported that there have been cases of elderly people with no power, suffering from hypothermia and
malnutrition.
“With electricity prices increasing at such ridiculous rates, and expected to continue rising, it is no wonder so many
people cannot afford to pay for power,” said Mrs Stewart.
“We are supposed to be a first world country, yet we cannot even look after our elderly. This is an indictment on a
Government that is supposed to care.
“It is not enough for Ruth Dyson to speak to electricity companies, more must be done to reduce power costs for the
elderly.
“They are literally being left out in the cold and the Government should be ashamed of itself for allowing the elderly
to suffer like this,” said Mrs Stewart.
