Foreshore Hui Where Everyone Can Be Heard

Foreshore Hui Where Everyone Can Be Heard

Friday 5 Sep 2003 Ken Shirley Press Releases -- Treaty of Waitangi & Maori Affairs

ACT New Zealand Deputy Leader Ken Shirley today announced that he has called a public hui on the foreshore and seabed issue, to be held at Tauranga's Bureta Park Motor Inn at 7pm on Monday September 8.

"It is galling to most Tauranga people that the Government is generally conducting its consultation in remote fishing villages, on marae around the country, in the middle of the day - when most people are working," Mr Shirley said.

"Access and use of our beaches, foreshore and seabed is a core part of Kiwi tradition - nowhere more so than in Tauranga and the Bay of Plenty, where a large proportion of the population enjoys the coastal environment, which has attracted many to relocate here.

"While the Labour Government is confining its consultation to Maori, it is the wider public that should be heard in these matters. I intend to outline the issues and invite the community to have its say," Mr Shirley said.
