Commerce (Michelle Malyon, SC-Commerce@parliament.govt.nz)

The committee did not meet this week.

The committee will next meet on Thursday, 28 August to further its consideration of the inquiry into the New Zealand Electricity Industry. The committee will also be hearing evidence on the Business Law Reform Bill. This will be open to the public.

Finance and Expenditure (Peter Hurndell, SC-FE@parliament.govt.nz)

The committee met this week to consider the 2002/03 financial reviews and hear public submissions on the Taxation (Annual Rates, GST, Trans-Tasman Imputation and Miscellaneous Provisions) Bill.

The next scheduled meeting is for Wednesday, 27 August in Room G.006, Parliament House, to again hear submissions on the Taxation (Annual Rates, GST, Trans-Tasman Imputation and Miscellaneous Provisions) Bill.

The meeting will be open to the public for the hearing of submissions.

Foreign Affairs, Defence and Trade (David Sanders, SC-FD@parliament.govt.nz)

The committee presented its report on the Immigration Amendment Bill on 18 August. The committee did not meet this week.

Government Administration (Lesley Ferguson, SC-GA@parliament.govt.nz)

The committee will meet on Thursday, 28 August to further consider the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra Bill, the Border Security Bill, and the petition of Dr George Paterson Barton Vaitoa Sa to repeal the Citizenship (Western Samoa) Act 1982. This meeting will be closed to the public.

Health (Catherine Parkin, SC-Health@parliament.govt.nz)

This week the committee travelled to Auckland to hear evidence on the Human Assisted Reproductive Technology Bill. Next week the committee will receive a briefing on folate fortification (9.30 am to 10.00 am) and continue hearing evidence on the Human Assisted Reproductive Technology Bill (10.00 am to 11.00 am). This will be on Wednesday 27 August, in Room G.002, Parliament House, and will be open to the public.

Justice and Electoral (Louise Sparrer, SC-JE@parliament.govt.nz)

The committee met twice during the adjournment to continue its consideration of the Supreme Court Bill. This consideration continues at its next meeting on Wednesday, 27 August. The committee is currently calling for submissions on two bills: Care of Children Bill and Lawyers and Conveyancers Bill.

Law and Order (Tracey Rayner, SC-LO@parliament.govt.nz)

The committee did not meet this week. The committee is meeting on Wednesday, 27 August when it will continue consideration of the Courts and Criminal Matters Bill, the Telecommunications (Interception Capability) Bill, the Independent Police Complaints Authority Bill, and the Corrections Bill. The committee will also hear from a submitter on the Corrections Bill from 11.10 am to 11.30 am, in Room G.011, Parliament House. This will be open to the public.

The committee is calling for submissions on the Police Complaints Authority (Conditional Name Protection) Amendment Bill and the Sex Offenders Registry Bill. Submissions for both of these bills close on 17 September 2003. Copies of the bills can be purchased from Bennetts Government Bookshops. The committee requires 20 copies of each submission. Those wishing to include any information of a private or personal nature in a submission should first discuss this with the Clerk of Committee, as submissions are usually released to the public. Those wishing to appear before the committee to speak to their submissions should state this clearly and provide a daytime telephone contact number. Submissions should be to Tracey Rayner, Clerk of Committee, Law and Order Committee Secretariat, Parliament House, Wellington.

Local Government and Environment (Marie Alexander, SC-LGE@parliament.govt.nz)

The committee next meets on Monday, 25 August to hear evidence on the inquiry into the alleged accidental release of genetically engineered sweet corn plants in 2000 and subsequent action taken. The committee will also hear evidence on the Local Government Law Reform Bill (No 2) (dog control proposals), including hearing evidence from John Anderson by videoconference. The meeting will be in Room G.003, Parliament House, and will be open to the public from 10.05 am to 12.30 pm, 1.30 pm to 3.30 pm and 4.15 pm to 5.30 pm approximately. On Thursday, 28 August the committee will meet again to hear evidence on the inquiry into the alleged accidental release of genetically engineered sweet corn and the Local Government Law Reform Bill (No 2) (dog control proposals).

The committee did not meet in this week. It reported on three bills, the Misuse of Drugs (Industrial Hemp) Amendment Bill on 15 August, and the Wine Bill and the New Zealand Horticultural Export Authority Amendment Bill (No 2) on Tuesday 19 August.

The committee’s next meeting is scheduled for Thursday, 28 August for further consideration to its inquiry into the administration and management of the scampi fishery.
