Political parties apply for de-registration

The two parties that joined to form the United Future New Zealand party have formally applied to the Electoral Commission to be de-registered.

The Commission is expected to consider the requests today.

United New Zealand and Future New Zealand joined forces at the last election and saw eight MP's elected to Parliament.

Party leaders explained that the applications were part of the formal process of the combining of the two parties, a process that will culminate with the adoption of a United Future New Zealand constitution at the party's November conference in Christchurch.

The two parties' logos and names will remain registered.
