Goff will face tough questions on sentencing law
National's Justice spokesman, Richard Worth, says the Justice Minister will face tough questions over his failings with
sentencing and parole laws when he appears before the Justice and Electoral select committee tomorrow.
Phil Goff will front up to the committee in connection with the financial estimates.
"Last year the Minister trumpeted the new legislation as his get-tough approach to sentencing," says Mr Worth.
"But that has clearly come unstuck.
"We've seen serious loopholes in the home detention scheme, with prisoners being left at large while their applications
are considered.
"We have the Minister scrambling to introduce a backdated law to allow 10 years' extra supervision of high-risk
sex-offenders after they are let out of jail.
"And we have chequebook justice with offenders being able to buy themselves a reduced sentence.
"These all point to a law that is seriously flawed and the Minister can expect to face some hard questions tomorrow,"
says Mr Worth.
